Sea Void 13:00
Boat in a bottle. Cast out to sea. Aimlessly drifting with nowhere to be. Spastic in orbit. Sink like a stone. Waiting for someone. Stranger unknown. Search for a heart beat. Moments are rare. Stare at the mirror. No-one is there Some call me crazy, but I took the dive. On my own, but never alone. I’m bored as a wall, drunkenly drawl. Cold in a world that’s grown so small. I long for a life on the edge of a knife To cut me from these chains. But I won’t deny, I cower from pain. I’ll always be here again... and again. Aimlessly drifting, from shore to shoreline. Under the moonbeams or rays of shine. Left all my dear ones, light years behind. Never to know where, I am to wind. Now I’m a drifter with no home to call. Out in the open, free from these walls Some call me crazy, but I feel alive. On my own, but never alone. I swim along streams, under blue, grey, and cream. Dreaming of a dream, where forever I dream. Yeah, I live a life where the trees are green And the forest always goes on and on. But I won’t deny, although I am free Sometimes, I too, grow lonely… lonely

Three Coronas and a bottle of shiraz. I mixed them all together and now I'm drunk as, The time I called you at 3:00AM. Just to tell you that I loved you Well, at least I thought I did. The sentimental memories truly got the best of me, And suggested it to be a great idea, But I just wound up dribbling in her ear, Oh, I never heard back from her again, I'm still wondering... How on Earth she grew to be so cold? But, I guess I know that now's my time to fold.

about

Inspired by Max Richter’s Sleep and Tim Hecker’s Ravedeath, 1972, the ghostly title track is a love letter to Nils’ long-distance partner who currently resides in Iceland. It was recorded to an image of Reynisfjara beach; the idea of staring out to sea evoked the geographical separation induced by the international border closure, but also the domestic “void” seen in the streets throughout Victoria.

The musical arrangement and structure of ‘Sea Void’ are purposeful in their composition. Each aspect was chosen to embody a characteristic of 2020 such as: the cold lack of face-to-face interaction, the drab boredom, the repetitive day-to-day cycle, and the overall uncertainty felt during the seemingly never-ending isolation. The immediate example of this would be the use of analogue synths to simulate the sounds of ocean waves crashing on the shore.

Accompanying the colossal ‘Sea Void’ comes the alcohol defeated piano vignette of ‘Three Coronas’. Recorded live in Yarraville’s Le Petite Café Rose after Melbourne’s second lockdown. Fundamentally, it's about “that drunken phone call that makes you cringe with embarrassment”.
